Aecon, AtkinsRéalis and Siemens Energy Win CAD 3 Billion Pickering Nuclear Refurbishment Contract

My Take (Arnulf Christa): CAD 3 billion for a single nuclear refurbishment demonstrates the scale of opportunities in critical infrastructure modernisation. Aecon's consortium approach with AtkinsRéalis and Siemens Energy shows how specialisation and clear work allocation unlock large industrial projects. European contractors should note: mega-contracts increasingly require integrated partnerships with complementary expertise, not solo bids.

Aecon Group Inc. announced on 21 September 2026 that its joint venture with AtkinsRéalis and its consortium with Siemens Energy have secured contracts from Ontario Power Generation (OPG) for the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station Refurbishment Project totalling CAD 3 billion (EUR 2.05 billion). The contracts encompass two performance scopes: a CAD 1.7 billion project for the renewal of reactor tubes, feeders and steam generators (Retube, Feeder and Boiler Replacement) and a CAD 1.3 billion project for turbine replacement executed by Aecon jointly with Siemens Energy. Aecon’s total share of CAD 1.75 billion has been added to the company’s backlog for the third quarter of 2026.

The Retube, Feeder and Boiler Replacement project will address Unit 5 of the Pickering facility, with replacement of reactor tubes and steam generators as core components. The Turbine Generator Replacement project encompasses 14 new steam turbine rotors and 4 generators, representing a significant upgrade to the station’s generating capacity. Construction is scheduled to commence in January 2027, subject to required regulatory approvals. Similar refurbishment work on Units 6, 7 and 8 is anticipated in subsequent phases.

Siemens Energy (Munich/Berlin), as consortium partner responsible for the Turbine Generator Replacement contract valued at CAD 1.3 billion, strengthens its position in global nuclear plant refurbishment. This contract is highly significant for the German energy equipment manufacturing sector, positioning the company as a key supplier for major nuclear modernisation initiatives in North America.
