US DOT Awards $1.73 Billion in BUILD Grants for Roads, Bridges and Ports

My Take (Arnulf Christa): The $1.73 billion allocation signals sustained US infrastructure demand that rewards contractors already embedded in American markets. With applicant requests topping $14.5 billion, European and global players face clear competitive pressure to establish or expand US operations—this window won't stay open indefinitely.

The US Department of Transportation (DOT) has awarded $1.73 billion in BUILD grants for 2026, with 77% ($1.3 billion) directed toward roads and bridges. Notable projects include $24 million for Interstate 94 modernization in North Dakota and $10 miles of advanced cable protection guardrails. An additional $169.9 million supports public transit safety and reliability improvements, while $136.8 million targets port infrastructure enhancements.

The funding cycle received nearly 1,200 eligible applications requesting over $14.5 billion in total support, underscoring the substantial infrastructure investment backlog across the United States. These awards are funded through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (IIJA), which continues to drive large-scale transportation and utilities modernization.

For international engineering firms and construction companies with US operations, this reflects sustained government commitment to capital-intensive transport projects, creating demand for design, planning, and construction services across multiple infrastructure categories.
